Covenant Groups

February 6, 2008

Today new people come to church for many different reasons; often they are in a time of transition in their lives. And generally they stay because they find acceptance and friendship, and discover what it means to follow Jesus. Small groups provide ways for people to enter our community, experience acceptance, and be nurtured in Christian discipleship. In any church with more than about 40 in worship, small groups are essential to the nurture of people and the growth of the church.  Today we need small groups that help us experience God’s love through each other, grow us in faith, serve those in need, and draw other people into faith.

During Lent, you are invited to join a small group hosted in someone’s home called a Covenant Group.   Spiritual growth is the primary purpose of a covenant group.  Each group will participate in one of two ways:  the group writes a covenant that creates safe space for deep sharing, provides accountability for individually chosen spiritual disciplines, and provides a powerful context for the group to pray for  one another, or watch a “Signs of Lent” DVD  which has scripture readings and uses stunning works of art to help engage the heart and open the mind for sharing and prayer.  Either way, you will encounter a journey to grow closer to God and to others in your Covenant Group.  Look for a host home near you to sign up in the narthex or patio.  For more info, contact Rev. Matt Colby
